Celebrating Thirty Years of RLC: 1980 - 2010

RLC30years.jpgOn Monday 4 February 1980, Redeemer Lutheran College opened its doors to 56 students in unfamiliar blue uniforms, seven teachers, and many supportive parents and friends.  The opening of the college was a culmination of many years of work, effort and prayer.

On Thursday 4 February 2010, Redeemer will see 1,099 students come to school in their very familiar Redeemer blue uniforms! 538 of those will be in the Senior School, 279 in the Middle School, and 282 now in our Junior School with 170 academic and support staff across all three campuses.

Thirty years on, a lot has changed at Redeemer.  We’ve grown from a small school for students in Years 8-12, to an established one-stop school for all students from Prep right through to Year 12. One thing that has not changed though is the central message: to provide an education of quality in which all activities and relationships are shaped and informed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In 2010, not only does Redeemer Lutheran College celebrate its 30th Anniversary, but Redeemer Chapel celebrates its 10th Anniversary of opening.

Redeemer is more than our College – it is our community. Many of us came as strangers, and found welcome and faith. It’s been happening for 30 years, and each year the number who join increases.

Our Saviour Lutheran Church, partnering with Redeemer Lutheran College, is launching an appeal to help the College by providing an upgrade to Redeemer Chapel. There are special benefits for the College which are beyond present College building capacity – benefits for community, for student life, for parents, for worship, and for the continuing involvement of students and family long past the school years. We all want a place wide enough for our ever-growing student and family population, as well as those involved over the last 30 years.

The Our Saviour plan to upgrade the Redeemer College entry area has been named the ‘Welcome Hub’. It is inspired as much by future opportunity as present need.

Flashback: 30 Years

Calmer Waters

The fourth of February 1980. The day which had been so eagerly awaited, the first day of classes at Redeemer Lutheran College. For those who had planned and worked tirelessly for more than three years, it was not only the beginning of the college. It was the culmination of the work and effort and prayer of so many people who had caught the vision of what this new Lutheran College could become. The many tiny trickles had come together to form a recognizable stream. A significant milestone had been achieved, but there was still much to be done for many years ahead. The calm of satisfaction and relaxation after so many trials could only be temporary.

Opening Day

In the fickle February climate, it was a fine day, a real blessing in view of the large areas of bare earth around the sole building and the fact that the construction of the car park had not yet been commenced. Fifty-six students in unfamiliar blue uniforms, seven teachers, and many supportive parents and friends with high hopes and expectations. It was appropriate that the opening ceremony was a worship service, setting the pattern for the future, and also that it was conducted by Pastor David Stolz, assisted by Pastor Vince Gerhardy.
