Sporting participation improves academic outcomes at Redeemer Lutheran College

Research shows that sporting participation helps shape character and improves academic outcomes. That’s why at Redeemer your child will be afforded opportunities across a variety of sports and competitions to help improve their skills and capabilities, foster their talents and passions, and give them the balance that co-curricular sport brings to their life.

The College offers a wide range of sports, both competitive and social which provide pathways and opportunities for our students to achieve their goals.

The College understands that each individual child will start their sporting journey at a different time and may also have varying reasons for participation. Some will want to play with their friends, some will play to get active, whilst others may have a dream of becoming an elite level athlete. Utilising this knowledge, the College has developed sports programs to provide pathways and opportunities suitable for the individual, regardless of age, gender or reasons for participation.

From Prep, students benefit from weekly Health and Physical Education lessons and are given the opportunity to try new sports. All students in Junior School have access to swimming lessons and participate in interhouse cross country, athletics and swimming carnivals each year. In Prep to Year 3, sport and fitness programs are delivered by industry specialists and are designed to encourage physical activity, develop basic skills and create enjoyment in sport.

Students in Years 3 to 6 participate in the GBC (Greater Brisbane Conference) Primary sporting competition and are offered training and fixtures in sports such as AFL, Indoor Cricket, Netball, Touch Football, Football (Soccer), Volleyball and Basketball. In the Senior School the sporting opportunities are expanded upon with the addition of annual high-performance sporting programs to complement the GBC Senior sporting competition along with a number of external regional and state-wide sporting competitions.

We do not encourage winning at the expense of our core values and that friendships, curiosity and courage are vital in our enjoyment and long-term continued participation.

Students who excel at sport can also participate in various Inter-School Sporting Carnivals, Logan District School Sport Trials and go further to Metropolitan East regional sporting representation with State/National representation the pinnacle.

Redeemer students benefit from purpose-built sporting facilities including ovals, a 25 metre heated swimming pool, six courts (catering for tennis, volleyball, netball and basketball) a gym/weights room and a multi-purpose indoor sports centre. Additionally, the College owns the D G Stolz Sports Fields – 40 acres on Priestdale Road, Burbank – just 3km from the College, featuring two full size sports fields, a synthetic cricket wicket and modern facilities.

All Years 7-12 students participating in the high-performance sporting programs also have access to Strength and Conditioning training, as well as a number of leading qualified professional coaches on staff.
