Learning Mentor Program

All students in Years 7-12 participate in the Learning Mentor Journey, a program developed to enhance student learning and wellbeing.

The Learning Mentor journey will be pivotal to the motivation and success of students at Redeemer Lutheran College. This innovative practice ensures that each student has the opportunity to meet with a staff learning mentor (in addition to subject teachers), who will monitor their academic and pastoral progress.

Through the structured program, learning mentors meet with students one on one to discuss academic achievement and to set short and long term goals. learning mentors discuss challenges that may be impacting on student development, their success at school and beyond. The Learning Mentor provides valuable observations and information about the progress of each individual student to key staff, including the pastoral care leader, learning enhancement staff, counsellors and subject teachers and will oversee student self-reporting to parents.

Learning mentor time will also be used for cultivating student personal development, with a focus on life-long wellbeing.

Providing each student with learning mentor time addresses the essence of our vision and values. In particular, the role provides for personalised study and learning opportunities that are flexible and authentic and that meet each student’s aspirations and educational needs.

The Goals of the Learning Mentoring Program are to:

  • enhance student wellbeing and optimism through personal development education
  • establish effective relationships
  • ensure that each student has access to a learning mentor who supports their academic, social and emotional growth
  • provide and encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning
  • identify individual student needs and set short term and long term goals
  • provide time for collaboration, peer tutoring and individualised study
  • improve educational participation and achievement
  • build personal, career development and employment skills
