Best Gremlins Ever! | Artist in Residence 2016

Once again Redeemer Art Department started Term 3 with enriching Artist in Residence workshops, offering students the experience and opportunity of having ceramic sculpture artist, Ruth Park, as guest artist. Ruth Park, from the Northern Rivers District of NSW, near Lismore, is renowned nationally and internationally as a ceramic artist and sculptor.

Ruth worked with the Year 9 Visual Art class all day Thursday to produce large, free-standing Gremlin heads. The Year 9’s created amazingly detailed mythical characters in a whole day workshop. Ruth was particularly impressed with the independence of the students and their ability to bring their very individual ideas to fruition.

The Year 11 Visual Art class experienced a full day workshop on Wednesday 13 July with the construction of a life-size human bust, paying attention to accurate human proportions and features. The Years 11/12 Creative Art students have the extra task of extending their bust with the theme: Recycle, Reuse, Reinvent. This is sculpture activity is a very challenging undertaking and the Year 11s and 12s were genuinely tested and had to show perseverance and diligence in grasping high level skills, techniques and processes.

As it was only a four-day week, Ruth stayed until 5p.00m on the Friday for many of the students who benefited from the extra tuition time to further resolve their sculptures.

Both Art staff and students appreciated Ruth’s talented expertise and her friendly, cheerful delivery. The workshops proved to be truly productive, fun and an extension of skills and processes for all involved, with students generating imaginative and discerning sculptures!
