Year 6 Canberra Tour

Last week, the Year 6 students travelled to Sydney and Canberra as part of their Civics and Citizenship studies. Students learnt all about Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. It was an exciting time to be in the capital as we had the opportunity to experience the buzz in Parliament House on Friday. There were many other highlights from the trip including the Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, Questacon, CSIRO and the National Portrait Gallery.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of the staff that attended the tour.  Their willingness to go above and beyond for the students, to ensure they had a memorable trip is certainly appreciated.  My sincere thanks to Ms Leah Cox, Miss Madison Saunders, Mrs Heidi Barnes, Mrs Ruth Evans, Mr Michael Trott, Mr David Simpfendorfer, Mr Richard Marlow and Miss Tamara Zingelmann.

In recognition of the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their education, the Australian Government has contributed funding for each student who attended the tour under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program. Should you wish to find out more information regarding this, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Below are some of the thoughts of students who attended the tour.

  • “The Canberra trip was amazing as we got to learn and see a lot of things that I never knew existed. I personally thought the Australian War Memorial was the most interesting place because I learnt more there than I expected to.” Peyton Morris, 6LC
  • “Canberra was a terrific experience! We got to see so many great places like Parliament House and Questacon. I also learnt many new things at the Australian War Memorial – it was my favourite place we visited.” Rhys Wood, 6LC
  • “Canberra was a blast and a memory that we will have for the rest of our lives. Our favourite place would have to be Questacon, where we got to experience different types of sciences, exploring light, motion and so much more.” Jaime O’Neill & Ella Cowley 6MS
  • “Canberra was an absolute amazing experience where we learned about politics in a super fun way. We got to spend time with our mates by working together in many different activities. This is a camp that you cannot miss!”  Eli Hadwin 6HB
