Young Citizen of the Year!

On Wednesday 26 January 2022, Redeemer Year 7 Student, Xavier Mitchell was awarded Young Citizen of the Year at the Redlands Coast Australia Day Awards!

Xavier is a committed young leader who contributed to his community greatly throughout 2021, working alongside his local schools, day care centres, retirement villages and charities to assist with various projects.

After being appointed School Captain at his primary school, Victoria Point State School, Xavier took it upon himself to become actively involved in the P&C (Parents and Citizens) Association. He not only attended their meetings, but he also went out into his community to source prizes for fundraising ventures that the school had planned. He had great success in this, sourcing many prizes for families to enjoy in school raffles, and also spent time hand-making items for the Mother's Day Stalls. Upon running his own child-focused stall at the school's Car Boot Sale, Xavier raised $1500, which he then donated to the local Lions Club.

Xavier actively participated in school working bees, through which he gathered some of the school's natural resources (such as rosemary), used it to make handmade soaps, then distributed them to the elderly in the community. He has helped individual students fundraise for State Champ Competitions and also encouraged a relationship with a local day-care centre, from which a buddy system between the school and local day-care was born!

With so much success in his ventures, Xavier and his mother created 'Kids Crew', a group who work together on fundraising projects within the community and encourage children to become involved! These projects included car washes, a bake sale, a sausage sizzle and raffles, where money was raised and donated to the local Lions Club, Christmas Appeal and Love and Hope Redlands, including their Back-To-School Project which donates resources such as school bags, water bottles and lunchboxes.

Alongside 'Kids Crew', Xavier ended the year by holding a family Games Night in the local community hall, from which funds raised were used to purchase toys and Christmas presents for the Redland Community Centre Christmas Appeal.

Across 2021, it was Xavier's goal to bring a student perspective into the dynamics, building positive involvement from community members and refreshing the motivation of local organisations. The inter-generational relationships were also very important to his work.

We look forward to seeing Xavier become involved in the Redeemer community as he commences his high-schooling years! Congratulations on such a fantastic and well-earned achievement, Xavier!
