We asked our Junior School Captains, Elke and Evan, to share their thoughts on being student leaders at Redeemer.
What do you think it means to be a student leader at Redeemer?
Elke: Being a student leader at Redeemer is really about making connections with the community and being somebody students can relate to and look up to. I often think about what I saw in the Year 6 students when I was in Prep, whether they were a student leader or not. I ask myself who I want to be seen as by the students at Redeemer and more importantly, how I want to make them feel. What matters most isn't a speech at assembly or a badge, but the impact you make on the community.
Evan: To me, being a leader is about serving the community and not thinking that I am better or smarter than anyone. It's also about not showing about what happens at home or outside of school and to always smile.
What do you hope to achieve as a Junior School Captain this year?
Elke: I am beyond excited for the year ahead of us and I hope to make school a place that makes students (and parents of course) excited on a Monday morning! I hope to be somebody who can serve the community with humility, lead by Jesus' example and I wish to leave an impact on the school that creates an everlasting, inclusive community where its branches flourish and reach higher than ever.
Evan: I just want to understand the needs of my fellow peers and do what they want not what I want.
Who is a leader you look up to, and what is it about them that you admire?
Elke: Quite frankly, there are so many admirable leaders that I look up to, making it incredibly difficult to choose one, but I especially look up to child leaders like Malala Yousafzai. She demonstrates that children can make a great impact on the world and leadership should never be determined by age, sexuality, race or religion. Yousafzai's courageous and persistent efforts to make a change in the world inspires me to raise my voice, led by Jesus because she proves that our generation is the future and the issues in our society do not only impact adults, but have a great effect on children too.
Evan: A leader that I look up to is Mahatma Ghandhi. I look up to him because he did all he could do to ensure that his people get freedom no matter what he went through
