Music Ensembles
Redeemer Lutheran College offers a wide range of award-winning instrumental and vocal ensembles for students from Years 2–12, and being part of these co-curricular groups greatly enhances young musicians' learning and growth. Ensemble rehearsals reinforce the skills and concepts taught in individual lessons, while performance opportunities provide valuable experience for developing musicians. Students can choose from a range of high-quality ensembles, including vocal groups, concert bands, string orchestras, jazz ensembles and chamber groups at all levels of learning. Redeemer ensembles are available at no extra cost to students.
Redeemer’s co-curricular Music program invites all students to take part in choirs, bands, orchestras, and chamber music groups, offering meaningful opportunities for musicians at every stage of their development. Regular rehearsals and performances allow students to collaborate, build confidence, and experience the thrill of making music together.
The program has earned a strong national reputation for exceptional musicmaking across a wide range of disciplines - our ensembles are recognised for their artistry, discipline, and teamwork. Students of all experience levels are encouraged to participate, knowing they will be supported and inspired as they grow.
From Year 2 to Year 12: String Orchestras
For students playing violin, viola, cello and double bass from Years 2 to 12. All string orchestras run for the full year.
• Piccolo Strings | A high-quality, leading introductory string program for students in Year 2.
• Junior Strings | An all-welcome string orchestra for students mostly in their second year of learning a string instrument.
• String Ensemble | An all-welcome string orchestra for students mostly in their third and fourth year of learning a string instrument.
• Sinfonietta | Redeemer’s premier Junior School string orchestra. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition only.
• String Orchestra | An all-welcome string orchestra for Senior School string players, and advanced Junior School string players.
• Chamber Strings | Redeemer’s premier, award-winning String Orchestra. Entry to this ensemble is by audition only.
From Year 3 to Year 12: Vocal Ensembles (Choirs)
For singers from Years 3 to 12. All Vocal Ensembles (Choirs) run for the full year.
- Junior Voices | An all-welcome choir for students in Years 3 and 4.
- College Choristers | An all-welcome choir for students in Years 5 and 6.
- Viva Voce | An all-welcome vocal ensemble for girls in Years 7 and 8.
- The Fellas | An all-welcome vocal ensemble for boys from Years 7 to 12.
- Bella Voce | An all-welcome vocal ensemble for girls from Years 9 to 12.
- Senior Singers | Redeemer’s premier, award-winning vocal ensemble for students in Years 10 to 12. Entry to this ensemble is by audition only.
From Year 5 to Year 12: Concert Bands
For students playing piccolo, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, double bass and percussion from Years 5 to 12. All concert bands, with the exception of Junior Concert Band, run for the full year.
• Junior Concert Band | Redeemer’s Year 5 beginner band program is recognised as one of the finest in Australia. Junior Concert Band is the co-curricular component of this course, and all Year 5 students are welcome to take part. This activity runs from Term 2 to Term 4.
• Symphonic Band | An all-welcome concert band for students in their second year of learning a band instrument.
• Wind Ensemble | An all-welcome concert band for students in their third and fourth year of learning a band instrument.
• Wind Symphony | An all-welcome concert band for advancing concert band students. Most students in this ensemble have been learning a band instrument for at least five years.
• Wind Orchestra | Redeemer’s premier, award-winning Concert Band for advanced band musicians. Entry to this ensemble is by audition only.
From Year 7 to Year 12: Jazz Ensembles
Extension ensembles for students who play alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drum kit and percussion. All students who participate in extension ensembles must also participate in a core ensemble on the same instrument, where possible, with guitarists and pianists encouraged to join a vocal ensemble as their core ensemble.
- Jazz Band | An all-welcome beginner jazz ensemble for students interested in learning jazz.
- Jazz Ensemble | A semi-auditioned/by-invitation-only ensemble for advancing jazz students.
- Stage Band | Redeemer’s premier, award-winning Jazz ensemble for advanced jazz performers. Entry to this ensemble is by audition only.
From Year 4 to Year 12: Chamber Music Program
The chamber music program is an extension program and, as such, students who participate in chamber music ensembles must also participate in a core ensemble on the same instrument, where possible.
- Flute Choir | A chamber ensemble for advancing flautists in the Senior School. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition.
- Clarinet Ensemble | A chamber ensemble for advancing clarinettists in the Senior School. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition.
- Percussion Ensemble | A chamber ensemble for advancing percussionists in the Senior School. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition.
- Tonkin Quartet | Redeemer’s prestigious junior string quartet and one of four College quartets. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition. Students in this ensemble must be student leaders in Sinfonietta.
- Simpfendorfer Quartet | One of Redeemer’s four elite string quartets, with a focus on developing high-level chamber skills. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition. Students in this ensemble must also be committed to Chamber Strings.
- Frieberg Quartet | One of Redeemer’s four elite string quartets, designed to develop confidence and technical mastery in chamber playing. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition. Students in this ensemble must also be committed to Chamber Strings.
- Kleinschmidt Quartet | Redeemer’s premier, award-winning string quartet. Entry to this ensemble is by invitation/audition. Students in this ensemble must be committed student leaders in Chamber Strings.

Music Tuition
Families may choose to enrol their children in Music Tuition, delivered by Redeemer’s team of highly-qualified instrumental and vocal specialists. Our staff are widely-respected performers and passionate educators, ensuring that Redeemer musicians receive individual and group instruction of the highest standard available in any school. Lessons occur weekly during school hours and take place on-campus, offering both convenience and a personalised pathway for students to develop their skills. From Prep and Year 1: individual piano lessons

From Year 7: Band Extension instruments (piccolo, bassoon, baritone saxophone)
Lessons at Redeemer are available both during and outside school hours and are taught by highly qualified teachers and instrumental/vocal specialists. Tuition rates closely align with the Queensland Music Teachers’ Association (QMTA) recommended rates for private studio classes. Offered on both an individual and shared basis (depending on the instrument type and student year level), lessons are billed per half hour. It is strongly recommended that students enrolled in music tuition at Redeemer also participate in the College’s instrumental or vocal ensemble program.

Music Curriculum
Students study Music as part of the curriculum throughout Junior School (Prep to Year 5) and may continue their musical journey by selecting it as an elective from Year 6 to Year 12, including the Music Extension program, which offers an advanced course for dedicated young musicians. Classroom learning provides strong foundations in creativity, musical understanding, and practical skills.
Redeemer Music Staff
Director of Music - Christie Fleming

Christie is a dedicated and experienced educator, conductor and leader. Her educational philosophy is deeply grounded in her Christian faith, shaping both her vision for learning and her belief that music is for everyone. Guided by the sentiment behind 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up,” she leads with a commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and excellence. She now directs a flourishing Music Department where encouragement, collaboration and a willingness to contribute are celebrated, and where each student is empowered to grow in confidence and skill through the joy of music-making.
Christie holds a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education from the University of Queensland and has undertaken extensive training in the Kodály methodology and pedagogy, which she implements across the curriculum with both expertise and passion. She is an external marker and confirmer for Music Extension through QCAA, monitoring samples of student work from across the state. She has served the Redeemer community for 17 years, with the majority of her teaching career embedded in the Lutheran education setting.
In addition to her work in Music, Christie has previously served as a Head of House, a role in which she built strong and supportive student communities through the consistent use of restorative practices. Her leadership in this space strengthened relationships, nurtured student wellbeing, and upheld a culture of respect and empathy; approaches that continue to shape her work within the Music Department.
Her experience spans classroom Music teaching across all year levels, and she is a portfolio conductor with extensive experience in both choral and band settings. Through strategic leadership, careful program development and sustained engagement in high-level professional learning, Christie ensures that students not only strive for excellence, but also develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong connection with music.
Head of Performance Music - David Law

David is a committed advocate for youth and community music making in Brisbane and throughout Queensland. He studied Euphonium at the Queensland University of Technology and has played piano since the age of eight. David is the founding President of the Queensland Wind Orchestra – an award-winning and internationally recognised ensemble - and continues to serve as its Artistic Director and Conductor. In 2026 he celebrates his 22nd year as President. He is also in his 19th year of conducting the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble. His previous long-term appointments include more than two decades with Brisbane’s Westside Orchestra, alongside seasons with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra, Ignite Choir, and a wide range of community-focused instrumental and vocal ensembles.
David’s work as a guest clinician and conductor includes Queensland Music Festival’s Cape York Instrumental Program; Griffith University’s Australian Honours Ensemble Program; Griffith University’s State Honours Ensemble Program across Queensland; and sectional lecturing with the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He has presented at the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference (ANBOC) in Brisbane and Melbourne, contributing to national conversations about building diverse and inclusive schoolaged and community band programs.
He has adjudicated at major state and national events including the West Australian Schools’ Concert Band Festival, Education Queensland’s Fanfare, the Queensland Catholic Music Festival, Queensland’s MusicFest, and numerous regional eisteddfodau. His experience also extends to musical theatre, where he has worked as Music Director, Conductor, and Pianist, supported by training at the multiple Tony Awardwinning Goodspeed Musical Theatre Institute in Connecticut, USA. More recently, he has contributed as an invited clinician for Opera Queensland’s Sing with Opera Queensland program.
As Head of Performance Music at Redeemer, David leads a suite of award-winning wind bands, string orchestras, chamber ensembles, and vocal ensembles, fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and joyful music making.
Deputy Head of Performance Music - Hayden Burton

Hayden graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with First Class Honours and the University Medal, studying violin with Graeme Jennings and later with Adam Chalabi. An experienced performer and dedicated educator, he draws on his diverse professional work to inspire and support the next generation of musicians. His performing career includes major productions such as West Side Story (Opera Australia), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, An American in Paris, Cinderella, The Pirates of Penzance, and Beauty and the Beast at QPAC.
Hayden is the President and Co-Concertmaster of the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra, and performs regularly with ensembles such as the Australian Session Orchestra, The Metropolitan Orchestra (Brisbane), the Queensland Pops Orchestra and the Southern Cross Symphony Orchestra. Hayden’s love of chamber music has taken him to festival schools including the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute in Washington, USA. He appears frequently with chamber ensembles such as Topology, Ensemble Cherubim, Angel Strings, and is a regular performing artist in Brisbane’s Candlelight Concert series.
In his role as Deputy Head of Performance Music, Hayden is a passionate administrator, teacher and ensemble director. He is committed to cultivating dynamic, high-quality musical experiences whilst fostering artistic growth in every student.
