2023 College Captains Reflect

In February, we asked our 2023 College Captains some questions on behalf of the Courier Mail regarding the journey that was ahead of them.
(You can read it here).

Now, as their year as student leaders at Redeemer comes to a close, we asked them to reflect on their experience.

TIM BELL

What advice would you give yourself 12 months ago?

Don’t limit yourself to what you think a good leader would do, push for change where you see fit regardless of the standards set by previous leaders or those around you.

What do you think your legacy is?

My legacy is the strong connections I’ve made with the younger year levels to inspire them as young leaders and instil optimism for the future.

Where do you hope to see yourself in the next three years?

I see myself standing up against injustice and empowering marginalised voices in our society and across the world.

DOMINIC DUVAL

What advice would you give yourself 12 months ago?

Be proactive, but also live in the moment and enjoy the opportunity I‘ve been given.

A year flew by, and if I could go back, I would want to implement ideas sooner, but also try to have more fun along the way.

What do you think your legacy is?

We may have not been perfect leaders, but we strived every day to be nice people.

I think our legacy will be “people over projects”, and I‘d be happy for our legacy to be that I was someone people felt comfortable around.

Where do you hope to see yourself in the next three years?

I hope to see myself immersed in something I‘m passionate about.

Whether that’s more school or work, I just want to find like-minded people and feel fulfilled.

CINDY LEE

What advice would you give yourself 12 months ago?

Stay open-minded and really organised.

Organisation is key to ensuring that you can stay on top of everything; it‘ll help so much when exams and assignments are due and help you stay stress-free.

What do you think your legacy is?

Our legacy is unity and empowering others to grow in themselves and grow as a community.

We hope that other students are encouraged or inspired to strive to do the same and empower others to grow as a community.

Where do you hope to see yourself in the next three years?

I hope to see myself finishing my psychology course and moving on to my honours.

I hope to be able to move out by then, but realistically I‘m unsure I could do that in that timeframe.

JEMMA WERNICK

What advice would you give yourself 12 months ago?

While it‘s all been very exciting, I would say make time for yourself on a regular basis and let the rest of your life be as frictionless as possible.

I know doing as much as possible is always fun but if you do too at once, you will burn yourself out.

What do you think your legacy is?

I hope my legacy is that I have been someone younger students go to for advice and wisdom.

I hope I was a friendly face in the crowd who people felt welcomed by.

Where do you hope to see yourself in the next three years?

In the next three years, I would like to study or work in the creative industries.

My goal is to be acting, directing, or working towards those areas.
